In the driver's seat, ready, steady, go: The V6 TFSI high-performance engine with 260 kW (365 HP) mobilises a maximum torque of 500 Nm and sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds. The top speed is 250 km/h. The distinctive sound of the S-specific exhaust system with double-flow twin-tailpipe optics underlines the performance of the engine. Different technologies support the sporty handling and support the efficiency of the engine.
The new combustion process operates very efficiently: With its artificially shortened compression, the so-called B-cycle process enables a motor process with a significantly higher basic compression. The expansion phase, which is considerably longer than the compression, thus achieves efficiency advantages and increases the efficiency of the motor.
In the partial load range, the Audi valvelift system in the partial load range allows a very short intake opening duration with a 130 degrees crank angle during simultaneous early closing of the intake valves. This shortens the intake phase. However, at higher loads the system switches to camshaft contour with a longer opening time and a larger valve lift of the intake valves. So the engine runs with normal compression ratio and maximum throughput.
The 8-speed tiptronic
The forces of the 3.0 TFSI engine are brought to the road by means of the fast and comfortable eight-speed tiptronic. This means the lower gears are sportively short, and the upper are long for speed and lower fuel consumption. Audi drive select supports a more efficient driving style: When enabled, the drive between 55 and 160 km/h automatically switches to freewheel when the driver takes his foot off the accelerator.
The quattro permanent all-wheel drive, which distributes the engine forces slightly in rear-wheel drive during normal driving operation, supports the sporty driving system. If necessary, most of the power passes to the axle with the better traction. The wheel-selecting torque control is active on all kinds of surfaces. And dynamic cornering is not a problem: The software function brakes the inside wheels, allowing a neutral self-steering response and stable and precise cornering.
An optional sport differential is available. This further optimises the handling and distributes the torque via two superposition stages active between the rear wheels. When accelerating out of a narrow curve, it gives more torque to the rear wheel. This increases agility. The sports suspension pushes the Audi SQ5 TFSI into the curve and avoids under-steering already in the approach.
The suspension with five-link axle at the front and rear lays the foundation for sporty handling. The elaborate construction allows for greater stability in the border area and combines enhanced agility with significantly improved comfort. The standard damper control here offers a particularly wide spread between comfort and dynamics. The adaptive CDC dampers (continuous damping control) are integrated together with engine, steering, tiptronic and the optional sport differential in the Audi drive select driving dynamics system. This allows the driver to adapt the drive system and chassis entirely to his driving.
The predeceasing model's mechanical compressor is replaced by the exhaust gas turbocharger and operates according to the twin scroll principle. This means that the exhaust gas pipes of the two cylinder banks are separated from one another in the manifold and the supercharger housing, and only meet before the turbine wheel. This technology improves the flow characteristics and the turbine responds more spontaneously. This makes a significant contribution to the early and powerful torque build-up. Short gas paths are favoured by the positioning of the turbocharger: It is located in the 90-degree V-angle of the cylinder blocks.
The crankcase and cylinder head have separate cooling circuits. After a cold start, the switchable water pump regulates the flow of coolant through the engine so that the oil quickly arrives at operating temperature. The exhaust manifold is integrated into the cylinder head and is surrounded by the coolant. This supports rapid heating of the engine. Once the engine is warm, the system reduces the exhaust gas temperature, which reduces the consumption, especially during sporty driving.
